Goals…setting and crushing…a few thoughts…unedited…

It’s funny how things happen in our lives. For instance, I made a goal to only edit this year and to not succumb to the ‘creative urge.’

Maybe it’s just me, but I argue with myself at times. “You need to finish the work you’ve started. Focus on that.” Yeah, right. What writer refuses to start a new story?

Because I don’t have enough on my plate as it is, I also added a goal to read some of the books on my to-be-read list. Of course, as soon as you make a goal, here comes nine million other things to distract you.

Yet, for all the distractions, I’ve managed to read Maus, written by Art Spiegelman, and Aimless Love by Billy Collins. Every year I read 1984 by George Orwell, and The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

So far, so good.

I’m on track to complete the goals I set for myself. Wouldn’t the world be a much better place if we all focused on our own goals and worked hard to achieve them?

Instead of coveting what our neighbors had, maybe we could work hard, save some money, and go buy our own thing. What would happen if we decided that instead of starting a war, we went over to help improve the lives of those around us?

Yeah, I know. That’s not the world we live in, it could be, but that’s just a pipe dream. Well, I’m off to find something else to read.

Y’all take it easy.
