Let Them Eat Crumbs…tentative title, unedited…

The session ended with no further incidents, nor any heated questions. It seemed to Jack Thompson that this entire proceeding had served as a dog and pony show for the public. The entire thing disgusted him. “You can’t fight in the pig pen and stay clean.” Still, he felt his constituents, nay, his country deserved better.
Jack walked back to his office. Barbara sat in a chair and waited for the sophomore senator to arrive.
“There you are,” she said as he walked in. “I figured you were out antagonizing your colleagues further.”
“It’s not my fault their so sensitive, ma’am.”
She forced a smile and met his challenging gaze.
“Jack, I’m afraid you don’t understand how the game is played here, son. This is a done deal. Calling people elitist snobs will get you nowhere. Yvette Williams is going to fill that seat, there’s nothing you can do to stop it. All you’re doing is getting yourself into hot water.”
“You mean to tell me, you all decided to give them the votes to fill the seat?”
“This is a tit-for-tat world, Jack. You would do well to wizen up. Otherwise, your career will not last long.”
“So, let me get this straight. You and all the senior leadership just gave up. This is why people on both sides get tired of Washington’s crap. None of you have the guts to fight for anything. The people deserve better than this crap.”
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with Thompson. I’d warn you against crossing Nanny Pusan, but you’re far too stupid to listen.”
“What happens to those who cross her? You guys wreck their careers?”
“You’d be lucky to just lose your career. Listen to what I’m not saying and read between the lines. You’re a dumb hick. Pay attention or resign and go home.”
