My mind is not my own this morning.
Today is Memorial Day. To many folks it’s a day of fun in the sun, BBQs, and a long weekend. To others, myself included, it’s a day when we remember those we’ve lost. In my mind, I can smell the sand. I feel the grime that covered me when I left Fallujah.
I can remember the bitter tears my brothers and I cried in a land that time has forgotten. My unspoken promise to never forget their sacrifice rings out in my mind this morning. The long line of boots, rifles, helmets and dog tags cloud my vision.
The cries of little boys and girls sing out. War is a cruel mistress, it’s pain cares not one whit who is caught in its blast.
On this day of remembrance, we reminisce about those who never came home. Those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
You were the best of us.
