My love affair with reading and writing.

Ever since I was a boy, my life has followed a certain path. Eager to learn, I made school a priority. The Greek philosophers and their ability to reason were among my favorites to read about. My imagination ran rampant when I read of these men. Then fiction was introduced into my life via Franklin Dixon’s Hardy Boys. Their keen sense of deduction stirred a passion in my heart for all things investigative. Dick Tracy, and Louis Lamour’s Hills of Homicide kept me seeking more. Then it was Robin Hood (not the Disney version) and Tarzan. King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table completely fascinated me with its settings and verbiage. Slowly, I lost my way into worlds that were crafted only for me.
After watching Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, my attention was snared by Louis Lamour’s westerns. Then it was Bill Reno’s The Badge series. By my teen years, I was introduced to Stan Lee’s Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, The Avengers and the X-men. I was hooked. Science fiction became a love of mine that kept me entertained for eons. Over and over, I would watch Star Wars and Star Trek. I would imagine strange new worlds, with lifeforms that would frighten. Governments that would willingly eradicate life for the sake of a laugh. Then, I read Midnight by Dean Koontz. The depth of his characters and the pacing of his books fascinated me and kept me thumbing through the pages as quick as I could. Many hours were devoted to reading his books, then he introduced Odd Thomas. My admiration of Dean Koontz reached a whole new level.
As I have grown older, my taste in reading has grown as well. William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson and so many other writers has stirred up a dust storm of emotions in my heart. This passion for reading has translated into a love affair with writing.
At rock bottom, I was told to keep a journal of every feeling that I experienced. Many tomes were written to drive the darkness out of my heart. I found solace and peace in writing. Then I was told to burn every one of them. I did. My infatuation with writing was turned into a full-blown obsession by two of the greatest women that I know. Rachel Embrey and Christy Embrey Grissom took me to my first writers conference. That was all it took. I came home, started a blog, and tried to write every day. Today, I am on WordPress trying to hone my craft. However, without these two wonderful ladies, I would still be piddling around not trying to use this gift. Thus, my love affair with reading and writing.
